So now the World Cup has ended in heartbreak it’s time to focus back on the horror movies. It’s been a while since my last review mainly because it’s so incredibly time consuming watching three and a half football matches a day. Now however I’m back and after managing to catch a showing of A Quiet Place at the cinema in it’s dying weeks, I thought it’s a good place to start to get back into the swing of things!
I got asked to read and review this graphic novel and although it took me ages getting round to it I knew it would be a treat. After watching Double Date the other week I fancied some more British horror comedy and luckily for me right next to it on Sky cinema was this one. The cast looked pretty decent, it even has Daredevil in it! The premise of some sort of vampire film was enough for me to give it a go. A Sunday afternoon spent watching British comedy horror is bordering perfection!
As soon as I saw the name and year of this film I had to watch it, it’s taken me a while to get round to watching it. I was browsing through Amazon Prime which I had to sign up to so I could watch the Final Destination films, when I saw this. I’d heard good things in the past and how could something with topless 80’s women and killer robots not be great fun?
I’m a big fan of Ross Noble’s free wheeling, for those unaware it’s a show on UK channel Dave where stand up comedian Ross Noble follows orders off Twitter. He basically riding around the UK meeting up with people who ask him to do stuff on his Twitter account, it’s amazing fun! I was gutted when I found out there wouldn’t be any more for the foreseeable future. I noticed that Ross Noble had said he was working on acting in another horror movie having already appeared in the darkly funny killer clown film Stitches. So when I saw this on Netflix I had to give it a watch.
I was looking for something to watch so decided to browse the films on Sky cinema. I saw this one and it sounded familiar then I remembered seeing Dexter Fletcher talking about it on some TV show. I’m always up for watching a British horror comedy and his brief involvement along with a couple of other cast members made me decide to give this one a go.
I’d heard a lot about this film and it’s weird distribution deal which saw it get cinema release in US, Canada and I think China but everywhere else Netflix had it. I’d heard many mixed reviews as well it seems people either thought it was fantastic or garbage that considered itself far cleverer than it actually was. The cast was strong and after Thor Ragnarok I’d watch Tess Thompson in just about anything at all.
It’s been just over two years since starting this blog up, I’ve had thousands of views and have hit nearly 11k followers on Twitter. Due to a few distractions over the last few months in the form of various video games and the missus working new hours, I’ve slacked in the amount of content that I’ve been posting. Now we’re settling into her new routine and I’ve finished a few games that were bothering me, it’s time to move a head full steam and get out at least two reviews a week.
So after two years it’s time for me to make a series of awards based only on the films I’ve reviewed since the last awards post I made. It’ll be mostly the usual stuff actor, actress, film etc. for those that aren’t down on how things work, if you click the bold title of any of the films that have won you’ll be taken to my review of that film! Years and years ago, probably longer than I care to admit Saturday night would have been filled with alcoholic fun. Now however it’s more likely to see me and Mrs AcidBurnsHorrorShow searching Netflix and other online streaming services for something to kick back and watch. After looking through we settled on Mom & Dad, I mean it’s got Nicolas Cage in and lets face it that means it’s either going to be awesome or horrific. The premise of parents going mental and wanting to kill their kids for no apparent reason seemed like a good enough line to hook me in.
After watching and reviewing The Ritual (Click HERE for review) I took to Twitter to see what everyone else thought of it, as usual there were varied opinions but most people found it at least a decent watch. This is where I was asked if I’d ever seen Stag a BBC mini series, I vaguely remember seeing it advertised but gave it no attention. After looking it up and saw that it had Reece Shearsmith, James Cosmo and Tim Key in it I was sold. I tracked down a copy and got ready to binge, not sure if that’s the right word for three episodes but never mind, I watched all of them back to back and here’s my thoughts.
